Pack 49 Newletter — April 2007

Lowell Spinners Sleepover

This year’s Lowell Spinners Scout Night Sleepover is scheduled for Saturday, August 16. Reserve the date!  We will begin sign-ups at the April pack meeting.  Cost will be $30 per person for the sleepover.  If you prefer to go to the game only (and miss all the sleepover fun!), tickets are $5 each.  Each Pack 49 scout gets a $5 discount per ticket.

For more information, visit the Lowell Spinners web site.

Memorial Day Parade

This year, Pack 49 will be marching in the Tewksbury Memorial Day Parade. All participating scouts must wear their Class A uniform, including neckerchief. In order for Tigers to participate, their Adult Partners must march in the parade with them.  More information will be available soon.

Greater Lowell District Summer Day Camp

Information regarding Great Lowell District Summer Day Camp is available at the Yankee Clipper Council website.  Camp will be August 18–22 at the Paul Center in Chelmsford from 9am to 4pm. Just a reminder that registration fee is $140 if paid before May 1, but $165 if paid after May 1. Camp t-shirts are provided as part of the registration fee.

Pack 49 Committee

The next Pack Committee meeting will be on Sunday, May 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Parish Center.  As always, all Pack 49 adults (leaders, parents, grandparents, etc.) are welcome to attend.  Bring your ideas and comments, or just observe.  We will be finalizing the May Pack meeting/Open House and discussing summer activities, including the Fishing Derby, School’s Out Cookout and our “official” Summertime Activities.

May Open House

This year’s Open House for new scouts will be on Monday, May 19 from 6:00–8:00 p.m.  The Pack could use some help from parents at the event.  We will need folks to set up tables and chairs, answer questions for prospective scouts and their parents, help fill out paperwork, provide cookies, brownies or cupcakes (all peanut-free, please), etc.  If you can help, please contact Marilena Dugan, the Pack’s Membership Coordinator, or Karen Denis, Committee Chairman.

Uniform Reminder

All scouts should be wearing their Class A uniforms to all Pack meetings and other events where Class A uniforms are required.  Class A uniform for Pack 49 consists of official BSA blue shirt — with all insignia properly attached — as well as rank neckerchief and slide.  Homemade slides may be worn instead of the official slide.  Boys should also be wearing dark colored pants or jeans.  No sweatpants or light colored pants should be worn.  Official belt, hat, etc., are optional.

Class B uniforms are for casual wear to events such as the cookout, sleepovers, etc.

If you have any questions regarding what is appropriate Pack 49 Cub Scout attire, please let us know!

Rocket Launch

The Lone Tree District Activities Committee proudly presents a terrific opportunity for Cub Scouts to build and launch their own model rocket.  This is a family-oriented event and we encourage each Scout to bring along the rest of his family.  Each family member can also participate by building and launching his or her own rocket, even if they are not enrolled in Scouting.  There is no age limit, so any person who wants to participate may do so.

This year’s launch will be on Saturday, June 14, beginning at 10am, at the Spencer, Pierce, Little Farm in Newbury, MA.  Cost is $15 per Cub Scout Rocket.  Updating last year’s event, Cub Scouts and their families will be able to launch rockets multiple times.  Each rocket will come with two motors, and additional motors will be available for purchase the day of the event.  No rockets purchased privately will be allowed.  The launch site preparation and launch pad positioning will be performed by CMASS.

Special prizes will be offered to any Scout that brings a “buddy” who is not currently enrolled in Cub or Boy Scouting.  All Scouts in attendance will receive a commemorative patch.  Please make sure that all Scouts and Adult Volunteers in attendance are wearing their best Class “A” uniforms.

There will be a tent full of Rocket related items for sale.  There will also be a cash grill offering hamburgers, hot dogs and soft drinks for sale.  Packs and Troops are encouraged to eat with their families, but pay close attention to the launch pad.  If you decide to bring food on your own, please leave nut related items at home.

The Yankee Clipper Council wants to remind all involved in this event to practice proper Scouting.  The buddy system will be in effect all day for all Scout participants.  Children should be encouraged to perform as much of the labor building the rockets as possible.

Last year, Pack 49 launched 15 rockets at the event.  If you are interested in being part of this year’s Rocket Launch, a sign-up sheet will be available at the April Pack Meeting.  Full payment will be due at that time. Checks only, payable to Pack 49.
