DEN LEADER INFORMATION
GENERAL LEADER INFO:
Please visit out our Pack website for up-to-date information & events. www.tewksbury.com/stwilliams/cubpack49/index.html Links to the Boy Scouts of America website, the Yankee Clipper Council website, and the Greater Lowell District website are available there as well.
.
Two-Deep Leadership is REQUIRED. This means that two non-related adults must be in attendance at every den meeting. Tiger Cubs must have one adult with every scout at all meetings. (Multiple siblings do not require a parent for each!)
Roundtable Meetings are the first Thursday of every month at the Latter Day Saints Church on Concord Road in Billerica. These meetings are open to all den leaders and are a great source of ideas.
Leader Training: All den leaders must be trained. Pack will pay for training, but many courses are free.
Free software to track scoutsÕ completion of achievements, electives and other awards is available to download through the Pack website. (Click on ÒScouting LinksÓ)
All NEW Scouts, regardless of age, must earn Bobcat before working on rank requirements.
Awards must be called in or emailed to the Awards Coordinator each month by a date determined at the committee meetings. This is usually one week prior to the pack meeting. If awards are sent in late, they may not be presented until the following monthÕs pack meeting.
The goal each year is to complete the achievements necessary to earn each ranks badge by the Blue & Gold Banquet in February.
Please encourage parents to read the parentsÕ sections in the handbooks. Many of the requirements need parental and/or family involvement.
DEN INFORMATION:
Den Dues: You can collect den dues but it must not exceed $25.00/scout during the course of the year (Sept – June). You can collect dues as you need it, a few dollars per meeting, or ask for a slightly larger sum to get you started buying supplies for your den. Another approach is to have each family responsible for planning a monthÕs worth of meetings and purchasing the supplies for that month.
Den Meeting Snacks: Many of the younger scouts have a snack as part of their den meetings. Be sure to check for food allergies within your den before planning any snacks. Most dens alternate families to provide snack; some dens pay for snacks out of their den dues, some dens do not provide snacks.
Places to have den meetings:
Den Meetings: Two den meetings, one outing, one pack meeting are expected per month. For Tiger Cubs, the outing should be one of the required Go See ItÕs until those have been completed.
A den schedule should be forwarded to the pack webmaster in order to have it posted online.
Scouts can work on things at home if they canÕt make a den meeting. This is left up to the discretion of the den leaders.
Scouts do not have to earn the same things at the same time. If some scouts do extra work and earn things quicker please submit them for their awards.
UNIFORMS:
Den Leaders should wear uniforms to pack meetings and other public activities, but are not required. A Class B uniform t-shirt can also be worn.
Scouts are encouraged to wear their uniforms at den meetings, unless the activity dictates some other attire. Class A uniforms are usually worn at Pack Meetings and other public activities. Class B t-shirt is worn at more casual activities.
The pack does a uniform inspection for the scouts during the November pack meeting. The only uniform items we require are the navy blue shirt (optional tan shirt for Webelos only), rank scarf and rank slide. If you know of any scout that needs a uniform but is unable to buy one because of financial difficulties, please see the cubmaster, committee chair or treasurer and we will do our best to provide whatever is needed.
The Cub Scout Leader Handbook, the Program Helps and How-To Book are great sources of activities and crafts. A lot of great information can also be found in the rank handbooks and the BSA website. (Pack will reimburse for books purchased, within reason. Ask if we have copies available already before buying new.)
Scout Shops have various kits, experiments & crafts to go along with the achievements in the handbooks. Places like Michaels, AC Moore, Ben Franklin, etc. also have appropriate craft supplies & kits (usually at a cheaper price).
Oriental Trading Craft Magazine has many reasonably priced craft ideas. Go online to: OrientalTrading.com
Home Depot – Attend a class at their store (pre-registration required) or talk to Customer Service about getting woodworking kits (They may give them to you for free). They have birdhouses, banks, etc. If they ask for something in writing on Pack Letterhead please let the Cubmaster or Committee Chair know and we will provide you with the necessary paperwork.

FUNDRAISER
We try to only do one fundraiser per year. Our Trails-End Popcorn Fundraiser has done well in the past and we will continue to do it unless the committee chooses another option. With the popcorn sales, scouts can choose prizes from the list based on their total sales. Extra prizes are given to the top sellers.
COMMUNITY PROJECT
In the past we have done leaf raking at St. Williams Church on a weekend in November. We ask that one parent/guardian per scout stay and help out. This counts for any community service needed for any achievement in their handbooks.
OTHER AWARDS
CUB SCOUT SUMMER CAMP
All registered scouts will receive a mailing sometime in January regarding Cub Scout summer day camp at Camp Paul in Chelmsford. This program is extremely popular. If your scouts are interested in attending, we strongly urge you to fill out the registration form and return it as soon as possible. Scouts can complete a lot of achievements during this week long day camp.
