TROOP 49
NEWSLETTER
APRIL/MAY 2010
COMMITTEE
CHAIR COMMENTS
Hello Everyone:
I would like to again
welcome all of the new scouts and parents to our troop. I hope
you are all beginning to get used to our routine. The boys have
been keeping very busy during the troop meetings and they are getting
a lot done towards their initial Scout and Tenderfoot badges.
As I am sure you have noticed, we do allow the boys to go out onto the
basketball court for the last 15 minutes of the meetings
if they work hard for the first 75 minutes. This will not be every meeting
since sometimes they will be busy for the entire 90 minutes, but if
they complete their work it’s nice to let them run around for a few
minutes.
Please take the time
to read the entire newsletter as it has important dates and information
regarding the next few months of activities.
Since I think they
are important and bear repeating, I would like to share with you the
following reminders/announcements:
- Parents, please
consider looking over the merit badges available at www.meritbadge.com, and if there’s anything you have an interest
in or experience in, we’d love to have some new merit badge counselors
and new badges to offer our scouts.
- If anyone has any
ideas for field trips/camping trips or other activities that the boys
may be interested in please let me know. We’re always trying
to find new and interesting things for them to do. During the
last meeting in June the boys will be planning their activities for
next year so we will be compiling a list of suggestions prior to that.
-
Any scout that has money in his scout account can use it towards any
of our trips and towards any gear/equipment he may need. Please
see Ken if you have any questions or need to check on your balance.
As always, please
see Ken or myself with any questions or concerns with any scout related
issue. Thank you for supporting our troop!
Yours in scouting,
Maureen Montecalvo
MYSTIC,
CT TRIP
Our next camping trip
will be Saturday/Sunday, May 1st/2nd
to Mystic, Connecticut. We will be meeting at St. Williams at
7:00am on Saturday and our first stop is our campground. After
setting up camp we will spend the day at the Mystic Seaport. Admission
to the Seaport area is included in the cost of the trip, as well as
lunch, dinner and breakfast on Sunday morning.
The cost of the trip is $25.00/scout and $35.00/adult.
The reason for the
more expensive adult cost is that the Seaport admission is more for
adults.
Please sign up and bring your checks to the troop meeting on Tuesday, April 27, 2010.

COMMUNITY
SERVICE
Mother’s
Day Celebration @ The Pines
Our Troop was asked
to pay a visit to The Pines in Tewksbury
on Saturday, May 8th @ 2:00pm.
There are about 20
grandmothers that live there that have alzheimer’s and the director
called and asked if the boys would come visit them. They have
asked us to pass out flowers and to have each scout stand up, tell their
name, and little about their scouting history (i.e. rank, favorite activity,
etc.). The visit will take approximately and hour and it will
really mean a lot to the patients. The director said they love
to see young people and while most will just sit and watch, a few may
ask questions. The visit will take place in the park area behind
the main building.
I realize that everyone has busy weekends but taking just one hour out of your day will make so many people happy.
This will also count for service hours so the boys will be benefiting in more ways than one.
I will be going over
everything with the boys at the May 4th meeting.

ADULT
POTLUCK SUPPER
We
will be holding our Annual Potluck Supper on Saturday, May 22nd
at 7:00pm in the St. Williams Parish Center.
Marlena Dugan will be coordinating this event so please save the date and watch for an email asking for signups.
Beer & wine are welcome at this event to accompany all of the
great food!
If anyone is in need
of babysitting services, please let Maureen know by the May 4th
Troop Meeting. We were thinking of asking some of the girl scouts
to come and watch the kids in the Parish Center during the dinner if
anyone needs them. We will need some time to arrange this so please
let me know by May 4th.
Saco River Trip
June 11th-13th
Cost: $20 per person
Join us for one of the boys’ favorite trips! We will be meeting at the
St. William’s Parish Center at 6:00pm on Friday night and traveling to Brownfield, Maine where we will setup camp along the Saco River.
Saturday we will spend a good portion of the day canoeing down the river and lunching along the banks. Don’t forget your squirt guns for the biggest squirt gun fight of the year!
We will be staying over Saturday night and heading home after breakfast on Sunday morning.
More information will be given out as the trip gets closer.
BOTTLES AND CANS
Come on down on Tuesday nights during the scout meetings and Sundays at noon to give a hand with Bottles and Cans. We sort them over in the scout garage and we are always looking for volunteers to lend a hand. Helping out even once or twice a month is greatly appreciated. Remember, the money we get for sorting bottles & cans benefits all the boys. This is what we use to buy troop supplies and equipment and to keep the cost of the monthly camping trips down.
